If they keep their salary range to themselves, they can use the question What were you earning at your last job? to peg the candidates salary range. Maybe theyll get lucky. Maybe their favorite candidate was earning less than they were thinking about paying someone, and they can save money! If this sounds heartless, cynical and unprofessional, it is. The practice of asking job-seekers what they were earning at their last job will become illegal in the state of Massachusetts beginning in 2018. Perhaps other states will follow Massachusetts lead. As you point out, leaving the salary range out of your job ads is also a bad business practice. It wastes time and energy on both sides of the recruiting equation. Recruiters often tell me If I give a candidate a salary range, theyre automatically going to think they deserve the top of the range! They dont realize that they are guilty of the same offense.
